Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore. The Faces. The Stone Presidents. Whatever name you choose to call it, the colossal sculpture is one of the United States’ great iconic images. Among the most visited of the National Park Services properties, Mount Rushmore is one of the top tourist attractions in the country.

Seeing over two million people annually, the park's infrastructure (such as ADA accessible facilities) has transformed greatly since its conception in 1927.  Among these improvements is the Avenue of Flags, added in 1976, which consists of a walkway leading toward the mountain that is lined on both sides by flags of the country’s 56 states and territories.

The Grand View Terrace was added in 1988, along with its amphitheater, offering views of the monument from the north, or mountainside, end of the Avenue of Flags. The Presidential Trail gives visitors the closest views of the sculpture, and the Lincoln Borglum Museum, which showcases exhibits from the memorial’s history, is definitely worth a more than a peek.  The Sculptor’s Studio, which dates from 1939, displays tools used by Gutzon Borglum in his carving of the monument, as well as the scale model he used to create the sculpture. Nightly lighting ceremonies are a must-see, and if you are in the area during the 4th of July, don't miss out on the spectacular fireworks!

Top your stay at The Foothills Inn, a Rapid City Hotel, with a visit to one of the most famous of national monuments, Mount Rushmore!
Listed at one time as one of the top ten Wonders of the World, it is home to over two million visitors each year.  Best of all, this tribute to our national history is only a 30-minute drive away.  When you go, be sure to drive through scenic Sylvan Lake, Needles Highway, and Pigtail Bridges, and pull over to snap a photo of the tunnels that face Mount Rushmore. Depending on which way you are driving home, you may have to stop in lovely Keystone for ice cream or taffy to finish off your day.

So this is the reason to Visit -Custer State Park-

So this is the reason to Visit -Custer State Park-

Custer State Park is an amazing drive, this is where most of the scenic photos are taken., During the 1919 year many government  projects were offered to the men so they could be employed during the end of WW1 era. This road was built back then. and it was said to be impossible. but it is here, you will see why they said impossible!  Tunnels frame the Faces, so what ever direction you are going  you may have to look back. The fun is just beginning!
Pig Tail Bridge,
I have traveled a lot and to my knowledge it is the only one I have ever seen. The needles highway is the most amazing, If your vehicle  exceeds 8.5 feet in width, you will get stuck in the middle of a huge granite spheres. So do not think you can squeeze your bus through!.  Look around and you will see a few Rock Climbers  at work. and alternative by pass.
Scenic Wild life Loop
This  is also unique, there are very few parks that have open range to several wild animals  If you have Children and maybe just you and you feel like Singing "Oh give me a home where the Buffalo Roam and the " That's OK ! Just do it!. It is time to stop singing because all the car windows are rolled down. Now the Govn..Parks department says "Do not feed the Burros" and yet everyone in front of you has an apple or a carrot  in there hand?  Well, I might just have one too.  Do you know the difference between a Burro, a Donkey, a Mule, and a Jackass ?  That's for you to look up, you may learn something new.
The State Game Lodge
The original Game lodge was much more interesting, you could just feel the ambiance and the warmth of the huge fireplaces.  It has been remodeled and who every did it lost a whole lot of character. they still have a lot of the original photos and History posted which is interesting.
Here is a little history
The State Game Lodge is a gracious native stone and wood lodge built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It served as the “ Summer White House ” for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 and was visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. And the Grace Coolidge Creek still serenely winds through the valley today., the  Landscapes are very well maintained and beautiful. a must see why the Presidents wanted a serene location like the Game Lodge. We use to go to the Game Lodge every Mothers day, for brunch It was a tradition.
Check out all the Lakes, you may want to try camping  on your next trip, because you have by now realized 2-3 days was not enough time like most of the tourist.to see all the Beauty and Wonders or the Black Hills . But by stay in in this- Hotel Rapid City -at the -Foothills Inn-,  you are at least in the center of everything & and you only unpack just once.

Whether you're a hardcore hiking enthusiast, a quiet nature communer, or just a mobile visitor who wants to ride the Wildlife Loop and grab a bite to eat, Custer State Park has what you're looking for.  Just 30 miles from Foothills Inn, you can enjoy the rugged beauty of the Black Hills on your drive to the park.  Just don't get out of your car to feed the bison or the burros, no matter how fluffy they look!Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer State Park is home to abundant wildlife and adventure; camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, or relaxing, there’s something here for everyone. Feeding and disturbing park wildlife is against park regulations.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Every August, motorcycles roar from all corners of the United States into the heart of the Black Hills.  The Sturgis Bike Rally is one of the biggest yearly highlights in Rapid City, South Dakota.  Popular not only among locals but out-of-towners and even out-of-country visitors, the Sturgis Rally brings folks from far and wide. For any motorbike enthusiast, this is a rally where they can meet with like-minded people, admire motorbikes, attend concerts, eat some great food, and even help raise money for a charitable cause.

While the number of attendees is notably higher during anniversaries of this event, the annual turnout rate is nothing to scoff at. That’s why it is a good idea to research the best hotels in Rapid City, SD, well before you come.  And since attending this event is a must for anyone looking to see the exciting side of South Dakota, it’s even more important to get your hotel reservations locked in.A Part of South Dakota’s HistoryThe Sturgis Rally is an important part of South Dakota’s history. The very first rally in 1938 was started by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders, the Jackpine Gypsies.  A small event with a small audience, it was dubbed the “Black Hills Classic” and had only nine participants.

Originally, the focus of the rally was to highlight the Jackpine Gypsies’ racing abilities and stunt prowess.  As the event quickly caught on and picked up steam, it grew exponentially; today, there are motorcycle, food, and tattoo vendors lining every street, and no end of exciting activities, concerts, and races and drives for charity. On average, the Sturgis Rally sports an attendance of around 500,000 people annually; however, the 75th anniversary in 2015 topped 700,000.

In 1998, Clarence “Pappy” Hoel, the Sturgis Rally’s original founder, was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame, following the Jackpine Gypsies’ induction the previous year. Since 1938, South Dakota’s Sturgis Rally has been held every year without fail except 1942.  World War II was raging at the time, and the rationing of gasoline made it impossible for motorcyclists to make their way across the country.

Comprising 95% of the City of Sturgis’ annual revenue and garnering approximately $800 million yearly for South Dakota, the Sturgis Rally is a vital part of the state’s economic well-being. But it isn’t always just about the dollars; the Sturgis Rally also does good works in conjunction with the local community. Sturgis Rally Charities, supported by the Sturgis Rally, helps to support over 60 local causes.  Rally riders and groups, such as the Christian Motorcyclists Association and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, consistently work with other charitable causes as well, organizing rides and events during the Rally to raise money that is used for good causes in the community.Finding the Best Hotels in Rapid City for the Sturgis RallyIf you’re thinking of attending the Sturgis Bike Rally, it is a good idea to look for the best hotels in Rapid City, SD, and make a reservation in advance. Given the large number of attendees who flock to the event, last-minute reservations can be a challenge.
